Nowadays, open data and information systems to support decision making are transport decision making trends. Bogota, with biggest and famous BRT system in the world have a big challenge in order to share services and operation information to users. On the other hand, Bogota mobility authorities does not have strategic definitions and frameworks to enable data sharing inside the sector neither to the users.
SDM and Steer proposed to FCO the creation of an open data framework to Bogota transport sector and an implementation of an approach to GTFS data generation for Bogota public transport (transit) system.
Our project team generated an institutional framework to enable transport authority to interact with other public and private entities in terms of data sharing policies and big data processes definition.
About critic mass creation, our team talked with biggest transport data generation companies in the city (public and private sector) to involve them in open transport data framework.
On the other hand, our team developed a software tool that enable TransMilenio to generate GTFS static files from planning and operation databases.
Successes and outcomes
Defining some main points, we design a process to share datasets inside transport sector and to share data with users. In addition, we created a framework to interact from mobility authority to other public and private entities. One of the most important project outputs is a list identifying legal conditions about open data in Bogota and Colombia. In practical terms, as a tangible deliverable, we developed a software tool to generate static GTFS of public transport in Bogota, from planning and operations databases.
Our work helped client to have technical background in relation with big data and open data and enabled transport sector to generate and publish data to users and other interested stakeholders.
