Steer was appointed by the London Borough of Southwark to lead the Camberwell Pocket Spaces project. This followed on from our successful delivery of the Revitalise Camberwell project which set a framework of proposals to regenerate the urban realm of Camberwell town centre.
We facilitated a series of workshops with the local community to identify six spaces for improvement, and their aspirations for each of them. These discussions formed the basis for development of concept plans for all six spaces. An overarching objective for all spaces was to provide high quality and visually stimulating public spaces that encourage people to spend time in the town centre. Shared space design principles underpin several of the pocket spaces which retain vehicular movement.
For each space, Steer prepared comprehensive urban design, landscape and highways engineering solutions, supplemented with high quality graphic materials including 3D visualisations. One of the six spaces has now been constructed.
