For most spectators travelling to a sports ground, their experience begins when they leave home, not when they enter the stadium. A crucial part of their experience is the journey along local routes that lie beyond the sports ground's outer perimeter, such as the walk from the tube station or coach park to the stadium. This is known as ‘Zone Ex’.
Zone Ex is increasingly important for venue operators as they look to maximise safety and customer experience and minimise the impact of their event on local residents and businesses.
Steer provided expert advice to the FA on Zone Ex management at Wembley Stadium, covering stakeholder interactions, communications, stewarding, traffic management, pedestrian access and other supporting operations. The key outputs were a report serving as a ‘how-to’ manual for Zone Ex operations and a structure for updating the report and operation in perpetuity.
